Ethics Commission Faces Lawsuit Over Disclosure Rule Changes

The New York Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government is being sued by two lobbying firms and ethics consultant David Grandeau over a rule prohibiting third-party designees from filing mandatory disclosure forms, according to the Times Union. The plaintiffs claim the regulation exceeds the commission’s authority and could increase penalties for lobbying firms.

Grandeau’s lawsuit argues the commission lacks constitutional standing, citing a previous court ruling that deemed its formation unlawful.

Similar challenges, including those by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and ex-Sen. Jeffrey Klein, highlight mounting legal pressure against the commission. The state’s appeal on the commission’s authority is set for review in January, with broader implications for ethics enforcement in New York.
