Finger Lakes counties see peak in animal collisions during fall months

Autumn brings a rise in vehicle collisions with deer and other animals across New York, and several counties in the Finger Lakes region are among the hardest hit. Data from AAA shows that October through December is the prime time for these accidents, with Monroe and Ontario counties logging some of the highest numbers statewide.

Monroe County recorded 1,517 animal-related crashes in 2023, placing it second in the state. Ontario County also saw a high number, with 1,151 crashes. These counties join others in upstate New York where drivers are urged to stay vigilant, especially during dusk hours when wildlife is most active.

AAA recommends that drivers scan roadsides, maintain speed limits, and avoid swerving to prevent more severe accidents if an animal appears.
