New Yorkers may experience a milder, wetter winter ahead as La Niña conditions are expected, according to NOAA. With a 74% chance of La Niña, warmer temperatures and increased precipitation are anticipated.
The National Weather Service forecasts a 40-50% chance of above-average temperatures statewide this fall and winter. Western and central New York, including the Adirondacks, may see higher precipitation, while New York City and Long Island have equal chances for normal levels.
While NOAA doesn’t specify snow amounts, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts rapid-fire storms bringing both rain and snow. Snow is likely in interior and mountainous areas, with rain and sleet more common along the coast and Interstate 95.
Snow forecasts depend on unpredictable storm patterns, so residents should be prepared for varied winter conditions.
