A Skaneateles man has died following a crash in the town Thursday night. James Greenfield, 71, struck a telephone pole near Skan Ellus Drive In on East Genesee Street around 9:30 p.m., according to Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. Greenfield was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he died on Sunday surrounded by family.
Greenfield is survived by his four children and two grandchildren, among other family members. His obituary describes him as a beloved neighbor and friend, always ready to lend a hand, especially with his backhoe or to plow driveways in the winter.
In addition to his community involvement, Greenfield was recognized for his work at Greenfield Farms, receiving the New York Agricultural Environmental Management Leopold Conservation Award in 2022. National Grid replaced the damaged telephone pole the night of the crash.
