HWS community honors 9/11 with day of service and remembrance

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) community will commemorate the lives lost during the September 11, 2001, attacks through a series of events on Wednesday. Members of AmeriCorps, Kappa Alpha Society, and the broader HWS community will participate in activities to honor the victims and first responders.

As part of the National Day of Service, recent graduates Olive McCall ’24 and Maeve Reilly ’23 will assist with stocking the Geneva High School food pantry. Members of Kappa Alpha Society will place 2,977 flags on the Quad, each representing a life lost in the attacks. At 10 a.m., HWS will join local first responders for the National Day of Remembrance ceremony at Long Pier.

The HWS community lost three alumni on 9/11: Andrew H. Golkin ’93, Scott W. Rohner ’01, and Michael J. Simon ’83. A memorial plaque honoring them is located at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life.
