Auburn police warn residents about two scams circulating locally

The Auburn Police Department is urging residents to be cautious after receiving reports of two scams targeting city residents. One scam involves an email claiming that spyware has been installed on the recipient’s device, allowing hackers to collect sensitive images or monitor activities. The scammers demand payment in Bitcoin, threatening to expose the alleged content to contacts if their demands aren’t met.

Another scam involves fraudulent text messages claiming recipients owe unpaid tolls to the New York State Thruway. Authorities emphasize that the Thruway does not request payments through text messages.

Police are advising the public not to engage with these messages and to report suspicious activity to local authorities.
