Election Day is getting closer and after warnings a couple weeks ago from officials in Ontario County about text scams – they’re renewing the advocacy.
The Ontario County Board of Elections is warning voters to be cautious of potential text message scams targeting personal data. Officials have reported that some voters recently received unsolicited texts from out-of-state numbers regarding voter registration, urging them to click suspicious links.
These “smishing” scams aim to collect personal information or cause voter confusion. Elections officials remind voters that they do not send unsolicited texts, and any such message claiming to be from the Board of Elections is false.
Voters are encouraged to verify their registration on trusted sites like the New York State or Ontario County Board of Elections websites. Suspicious texts can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission.
