Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have secured $59 million in federal funding to modernize and enhance safety at 26 airports across New York State. The funding, awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, will support projects such as terminal expansions, taxiway rehabilitation, and improved signage and safety measures.
“This investment will help airports of all sizes reach new heights,” said Senator Schumer. Senator Gillibrand added, “It is vital that airports have the up-to-date infrastructure needed for passengers to travel safely.”
Several local airports will benefit from this funding, including:
- Frederick Douglass/Greater Rochester International Airport in the Finger Lakes region, which will receive $2.93 million for terminal reconstruction and an additional $1.07 million for a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicle.
- Penn Yan Airport will receive $1.58 million for taxiway expansion to support increased capacity.
- Ithaca Tompkins International Airport in the Southern Tier will receive over $2 million for a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicle, $401,692 for taxiway rehabilitation and construction, and $187,537 for runway signage and lighting improvements.
- Cortland County/Chase Field Airport will receive $419,482 for shifting and reconstructing its taxiway.
These projects are crucial for improving airfield safety, capacity, and the overall traveler experience, ensuring that New York’s regional airports can meet the demands of modern air travel while boosting local economies.
