Route 34 Bridge Over Erie Canal to Be Replaced in Cayuga County

The U.S. Coast Guard has received an application from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to replace the Route 34 Bridge across the Erie Canal near the towns of Brutus and Cato. The proposed project aims to address structural deficiencies in the current bridge and improve navigation.

The new three-span steel bridge will be 680.75 feet long and 44.167 feet wide, replacing the existing five-span structure. Construction is scheduled from December 2024 to March 2025, with traffic detours in place during that time. The project will increase navigational clearances, enhancing safety for vessels on the canal.

Public comments regarding the project’s potential impact on navigation are being solicited through October 4, 2024.
