A horse in Cato has died from Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), a rare but deadly virus transmitted by mosquitoes, the New York State Department of Health confirmed. EEE poses significant risks, with a 30% mortality rate in humans and potential for severe neurological issues in survivors, according to the CDC.
The Cayuga County Health Department reported that mosquito pools in central New York, including Cayuga County, have tested positive for EEE and West Nile virus. Although EEE has affected horses in other counties, there are no additional cases in Cayuga County.
Health officials urge residents to take precautions against mosquito bites and recommend horse owners consult veterinarians about the EEE vaccine to protect their animals.
