The Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) Lakers men’s soccer team is gearing up for the 2024 season with renewed ambition and fresh leadership under first-year Head Coach Joe Balls. Building on a strong 2023 campaign, where the Lakers won seven of their last eight games and reached the Region III semifinals. The team is set to continue its momentum with a diverse and talented roster.
This season, the Lakers welcome a global influx of talent. This includes goalkeepers from Fairport, Germany, and New Zealand, and defenders from Brazil, Spain, and Canandaigua. The midfield and forward lines are equally international, featuring players from England, Argentina, Australia, and Germany. Returning players, such as goalkeeper Ignacio Jiminez (Colombia) and defender Bernardo Castel (Brazil), will provide crucial experience and leadership.
Coach Balls has set high expectations, with a clear goal of winning the regional tournament. He emphasizes the importance of team chemistry and the need for returning players to help freshmen quickly adapt. “We need to believe in ourselves regardless of what is in front of us,” Balls stated, highlighting the team’s winning mindset as they strive for a Region III Championship.
