The New York Yankees recalled Anthony Volpe from Triple-A on Thursday after placing second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the injured list with a sprained right thumb.
Chisholm suffered the injury while sliding into second base during Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies. His injured-list stint is retroactive to Wednesday, and he will be shut down from baseball activities for up to 10 days. It remains uncertain whether he will return before the regular season ends September 27.
Volpe, 25, was demoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in early August after George Lombard Jr. took over as the Yankees’ starting shortstop. Since then, Volpe has transitioned to second base while also seeing time at shortstop and third base.
He has played 19 of 28 games at second base in Triple-A, committing one error in 78 chances. The Yankees believe he is ready to handle the position at the major league level.
Volpe has also produced offensively since his demotion, batting .284 with 10 home runs and a 1.023 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. He has hit .388 with six home runs and a 1.320 on-base-plus-slugging percentage over his last 13 games.
Volpe will now join Lombard in the Yankees’ infield after Lombard replaced him at shortstop. Lombard also hit his first career grand slam Wednesday against Colorado.
