HWS welcomes 98 transfer students from Wells College after unexpected closure

Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) are preparing to welcome 98 transfer students this fall, including 67 from the recently closed Wells College in Aurora. Following Wells College’s closure announcement in May, HWS quickly mobilized resources to support the transitioning students.

HWS Vice President for Admissions and Financial Aid Mike Quinn expressed empathy for the Wells students facing uncertainty, emphasizing the colleges’ commitment to facilitating a smooth transfer process. The admissions team streamlined applications and guaranteed financial aid, while faculty ensured seamless credit transfers. Incoming students, like India Buff ’27 and Dan Adelman ’25, praised HWS for its welcoming atmosphere and ease of transition.

HWS offers these new students the chance to live in Miller House and engage with popular academic programs, including biology, business, and environmental studies. Senior Associate Director of Admissions Melanie Sage highlighted the alignment between Wells’ educational approach and HWS’s personalized mentoring, ensuring a comfortable transition for the students.
