As the New York State Attorney General’s Office decides the future of Wells College’s properties, an online petition is calling for the land to be returned to the Cayuga Nation.

The petition, titled “Revitalize Wells College with Land Back,” advocates for the properties to be given to the traditional Council of Chiefs of the Cayuga Nation, who were displaced during the 1779 Sullivan-Clinton campaign.

As of Friday, the petition had 546 signatures, aiming for 1,000. It is addressed to Attorney General Letitia James, who is handling the assets of the now-closed Wells College, which owns about 25 properties, including a 300-acre campus.

Advocates have also started another petition to the Department of the Interior to rescind recognition of Clint Halftown as the Cayuga Nation’s representative, aiming to resolve internal conflicts within the nation.
