Waterloo home invader dies after assaulting Clyde resident

A Waterloo man died following an apparent home invasion on West Genesee Street in Clyde late Sunday night. Authorities identified the intruder as Jeffrey C. Smith, 47, who allegedly entered the home around 10:55 p.m. and attacked the 67-year-old homeowner with a blunt instrument.

A violent struggle ensued, leaving both men injured. The homeowner suffered head injuries and was treated at Newark-Wayne Hospital before being released. Smith was also transported to the same hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to injuries sustained during the altercation.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the incident, with further details yet to be released.
