James hails court ruling against Google’s search engine monopoly

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a significant legal victory after the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that Google maintained an illegal monopoly over online search engines. The decision follows a lawsuit co-led by Attorney General James and a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general, alongside the U.S. Department of Justice, challenging Google’s monopolistic practices.

“This decision is a major victory in our efforts to ensure all companies, no matter how powerful or influential, are held accountable when they harm others,” James stated. She emphasized that Google’s tactics limited consumer choice by paying billions to block competitors.

The 2020 lawsuit alleged Google’s anticompetitive conduct through exclusive contracts with tech companies like Apple and Samsung, ensuring Google’s search engine remained the default on most devices. The court found Google violated the Sherman Act by maintaining monopoly power over search services and ads, highlighting the anticompetitive nature of its agreements.
