Boar’s Head has initiated a recall of over 200,000 pounds of deli meats due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. The recall affects liverwurst and various other deli meat products produced on the same line.
The recall includes Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst and several ham, bologna, and salami products, all bearing sell-by dates between July 25 and August 30. These items were distributed nationwide to retail delis and are marked with establishment number “EST. 12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The contamination was discovered after the Maryland Department of Health found Listeria in an unopened liverwurst sample during an outbreak investigation. As of July 25, 34 people across 13 states have fallen ill, with 33 hospitalized and two fatalities. FSIS and CDC are investigating the multistate outbreak linked to deli meats.
Consumers are urged to discard or return the recalled products and clean refrigerators thoroughly to prevent cross-contamination. Retailers should sanitize deli areas and discard open meats.
