Local police notified the Secret Service about a suspicious person before a gunman shot at Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania, sources told NBC News.
The suspect, Thomas Crooks, 20, was flagged by rallygoers and pursued by police before the Secret Service was informed. Crooks later climbed onto a nearby roof and opened fire, injuring Trump and killing former fire chief Corey Comperatore, 50.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said an independent review panel will investigate the incident. Rep. Jeff Duncan called for an independent commission to examine security failures, while Trump reached out to Comperatore’s family to offer condolences.
