With the legislative session ending June 6, Gov. Kathy Hochul is urging lawmakers to pass bills to limit teen social media use. Hochul emphasizes the impact of social media on teen mental health, citing depression and suicide.

One proposed bill would require age verification for social media users and parental controls for those under 18. Another measure aims to protect kids’ personal data. Hochul remains optimistic about passing these bills, stating their importance for parents across the state.

Trade group Tech NYC, representing companies like Google and Meta, opposes the bills, raising concerns about age verification and algorithm changes. Hochul, however, has bipartisan support in the Legislature and continues to push for the bills’ passage.
