At their meeting on April 23, members of the Clifton Springs Rotary Club received an update on the impactful “Building Minds in South Sudan” (BMSS) initiative by co-founder Sebastian Maroundit. Having escaped a war-torn region as a “lost boy,” Maroundit returned to his newly-formed homeland to spearhead efforts in improving literacy, gender equality, and economic opportunities.

BMSS, now serving 959 students across its programs, is gearing up to construct its fifth school due to growing demand. The initiative’s broad goals include advancing gender equality, providing safe educational environments, and offering microfinance grants to women entrepreneurs. It also focuses on fostering partnerships with government bodies to enhance educational policies and infrastructure, crucial for the country’s development.

The Clifton Springs Rotary has been a proud supporter of BMSS for over 12 years, aiding its mission to transform educational access in South Sudan, promoting economic independence, and improving local food sustainability through community agriculture projects.
