In March 2024, New York State’s private sector employment saw an increase of 19,300 jobs, a growth of 0.2%, bringing the total to 8,348,300, according to preliminary data from the New York State Department of Labor. This rate of growth matched the national average for the same period. Over the year, the state’s job growth was 1.3%, slightly trailing the national rate of 1.7%.

The state’s unemployment rate also improved, dipping from 4.4% in February to 4.3% in March, while the labor force participation rate remained stable at 61.4%. This decrease in the unemployment rate occurred despite a reduction of 8,800 in the state’s labor force.

These employment statistics are based on a payroll survey of New York businesses conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and are subject to revision as more data becomes available. This report highlights an ongoing recovery in employment amidst variable economic conditions statewide.
