With over 6,000 postal workers bitten by dogs last year, Solvay mail carrier Bob DeLorenzo is raising awareness about bite prevention during June’s Dog Bite Awareness Month, according to WSYR-TV. After 18 years on the job, he’s had two close encounters himself.
DeLorenzo says staying alert and using USPS-issued tools like spray and horns helps reduce risk. He emphasizes understanding a dog’s protective instincts and encourages residents to secure pets during expected delivery hours.
The USPS trains carriers on safety, but DeLorenzo believes community cooperation—like keeping dogs indoors or leashed—makes all the difference in preventing attacks.
