Brutus bridge over Seneca River will be replaced in 2026

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced plans to replace the deteriorated bridge on State Route 34 over the Seneca River in the town of Brutus. Scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, the project is currently in the design phase. This decision follows concerns from local residents about the bridge’s safety due to its poor condition and reduction to one lane since February.

In response to complaints about the rough ride caused by multiple potholes, NYSDOT conducted maintenance work this week. Crews were observed patching potholes, which had prompted an advisory for drivers about potential long delays. The bridge had been limited to a single lane with alternating traffic to ensure safety after an inspection identified defects in the railings.

NYSDOT continues to monitor the bridge’s condition closely, carrying out necessary maintenance while the full replacement project remains under preparation. Community members have been urged to stay informed as updates on the project’s progression and future impacts become available.
