Taughannock Falls celebration postponed to protect endangered falcons

A special event planned at Taughannock Falls State Park was postponed after concerns arose about its impact on endangered Peregrine falcons.

The celebration, intended to mark the 100th anniversary of the New York State Park system, was initially scheduled for April 18-20.

It included nighttime activities like guided hikes with lighting, which residents feared would disturb the falcons currently nesting in the park.

Community members voiced their concerns on social media, urging a reevaluation of the event to safeguard the falcons, known for being the fastest birds in flight.

The falcons, once nearly driven away by pesticide use in the mid-20th century, have recently begun nesting again at the park’s cliffs.
