The New York Yankees (12-4) battled back in the ninth inning to tie the game but fell 8-7 to the Cleveland Guardians (10-5) in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field.

New York trailed 5-4 entering the ninth, but Anthony Volpe ripped a two-out, game-tying double to send the game into extra innings. The Yankees grabbed a 7-5 lead in the 10th on Anthony Rizzo’s two-run single before Cleveland plated three off Caleb Ferguson, winning the game on Andres Giménez’s sacrifice fly.

Aaron Judge crushed a three-run home run earlier in the contest, and Jose Trevino also went deep.

Nestor Cortes allowed four runs in four innings. Luke Weaver gave up a go-ahead homer in the eighth, while Nick Burdi, Victor González, and Clay Holmes had scoreless outings.

Box Score

The Yankees will head to Toronto to begin a three-game series with the Blue Jays on Monday at 7:07 p.m. Luis Gil will take the ball for New York.
