The Buffalo Sabres, needing every win and help from the outside to stay in the Eastern Conference Wild-Card race, gave up three first-period goals and fell 3-1 to the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday afternoon.
Buffalo (37-36-5, 79 points), who outshot Detroit 38-24, allowed all three goals in the first seven minutes of the game and couldn’t climb out of the hole as Tage Thompson tallied the only goal for the Sabres on the power play at 13:16 of the first.
Alex Tuch and Zach Benson recorded assists, while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 21 saves.
