Miguel Martinez, a 31-year-old undocumented man seeking asylum after crossing the southern border, has been arrested and charged with felony burglary in the Town of Union, as announced by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office on Monday. The charge stems from an incident on March 22, where Martinez is accused of breaking into a second-floor apartment through a bedroom window, prompting a 911 call from a concerned neighbor.
The arrest occurred after the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to reports of suspicious activity at an apartment complex on JFK Boulevard. Martinez was found near the scene and taken into custody without any issues. He now faces a charge of Burglary in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony, and was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part.
Currently held at the Broome County Jail, Martinez’s arrest has been reported to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with plans for a transfer of custody to be arranged at a later date. This case highlights the ongoing collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
