Livingston County marks March 29 as Vietnam War Veterans Day

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

In a significant move the Livingston County Board of Supervisors designated March 29, 2024, as Vietnam War Veterans Day. This day is dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of those who served in one of America’s longest military conflicts, including over 3.4 million service members deployed to Southeast Asia. Notably, 21 servicemen from Livingston County are remembered among the names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

David Terry, the Director of Livingston County Veteran Services, emphasized the importance of recognizing Vietnam veterans for both their wartime service and the challenges they have faced upon their return, including the struggle to receive deserved benefits. Terry urged community members to welcome, thank, and support veterans and their families in seeking benefits.

This commemoration coincides with national efforts to better serve Vietnam veterans, highlighted by recent updates to the PACT Act, which expands eligibility for health conditions related to toxic exposure. The observance of Vietnam War Veterans Day reflects a broader commitment to acknowledging the enduring impact of the war on veterans and their communities, ensuring their sacrifices are not forgotten.
