Skaneateles welcomes new principal to elementary school

JoAnna Schmeling, a dedicated employee of the Skaneateles Central School District, has been appointed as the new principal of Waterman Elementary School, effective July 1. Schmeling, who is transitioning from her role as the assistant principal at Skaneateles High School, will succeed Patrick Brown upon his retirement after two decades of service.


With a rich background in education, including an associate degree from Cayuga Community College, a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland, and a master’s degree, Schmeling brings over a decade of experience within the district. Her journey has seen her take on roles as a substitute teacher, kindergarten teacher, and special education teacher at various education levels within the district.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the position, Schmeling remarked on her love for the Skaneateles community and her passion for early education. She aims to continue the legacy of her predecessor, Patrick Brown, emphasizing the welcoming, loving, and nurturing environment that Waterman Elementary is known for. Schmeling is eager to guide the school into its next chapter, focusing on the learning and growth of all its students.
