The village of Aurora is addressing the growing challenges posed by short-term rentals with a proposed local law aimed at regulating properties listed on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo.
Scheduled for a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, at the Aurora Fire Department, the law seeks to mitigate issues such as inadequate parking, improper trash disposal, increased traffic, and excessive noise, which are attributed to the rising popularity of short-term rentals.
The proposed law intends to preserve the village’s residential character and functionality by limiting the negative impacts of short-term rentals on the community, according to The Citizen. It suggests a permitting system, with two-year renewable and one-year non-renewable temporary permits, and restrictions on the number of permits an individual or entity can hold. The law also focuses on ensuring property code compliance and addresses concerns about the dwindling number of full-time residents, vital for emergency services, local schools, and community participation.
The Finger Lakes Vacation Rental Alliance, however, argues that objections to short-term rentals are often based on misconceptions, noting the benefits they bring to property owners and multigenerational families seeking accommodation.
