Canandaigua City Council approves 2024 budget with tax and utility increase

The Canandaigua City Council, in a unanimous decision on Thursday, approved the city’s budget for 2024, setting the spending plan at $20.7 million, marking a notable increase of 10.8% from the 2023 budget of $18.7 million.

This new budget will result in a slight uptick in the tax burden for city property owners, with the tax rate now set at $7.74 per $1,000 of assessed property value, up by 7 cents from the current rate. Consequently, the average homeowner in Canandaigua will experience an increase of approximately $6.28 in their city tax bill for the upcoming year.

Additionally, the approved budget outlines significant changes in the water and sewer funds. The water fund is proposed to be $5.9 million, with an increase of 15.1% in the city water rate, bringing it to $4.73 per 1,000 gallons.

This adjustment will also raise the minimum quarterly water bill to $53. In a similar vein, the sewer fund is projected to reach $6.8 million, up by 12.4%, with a new rate of $6.07 per 1,000 gallons and a minimum quarterly bill of $68.
