Surge in vehicle thefts hits suburbs: Skaneateles authorities advise vigilance

A rising tide of automobile thefts and property robberies is plaguing the suburbs, moving outward from the central cities.

Skaneateles Police Department reports a wave of such crimes this week, prompting authorities in the Village of Skaneateles to encourage residents to enact preventive measures.

Several cars and numerous items have been reported stolen, drawing attention not only from local police but also from state police and the county sheriff’s office, spotlighting a wider-reaching concern for areas outside the immediate village.

Police attribute the surge in thefts to people leaving valuables visible and keys inside their cars, converting them into appealing targets for thieves.

The local population is being advised not to succumb to a false sense of security and to ensure their belongings and vehicles are securely locked. Police Chief Scott Heggelke emphasized the community’s general safety but warned that no area is completely exempt from criminal activity.
