The New York Mets (50-56) fell 7-6 to the Kansas City Royals (33-75) in the series opener on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium after Josh Walker was called for a balk with two outs and the bases loaded in the tenth inning.
Pete Alonso smacked his 31st home run of the season and added a run-scoring single. Francisco Alvarez crushed his 21st homer, while Brett Baty and Mark Vientos added RBI.
Jose Quintana allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out two.
The Mets will try to bounce back and even the series on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m.
