Over Memorial Day weekend, two fires at the Steuben County landfill transfer station in Hornell led to the site’s temporary closure.
The first fire occurred in a garbage collection trailer on Saturday, which was extinguished by the South Hornell Fire Department, North Hornell and Canisteo firefighters, along with Butler Construction personnel.
However, a subsequent fire ignited in the office building early Sunday morning, necessitating another response from the fire crews.
While no injuries were reported and the cause remains undetermined, Eric Rose, Steuben County Public Works commissioner, lauded the firefighters for their efforts in minimizing the damage.
The transfer station will remain closed until further notice, as contractors are currently assessing the damage, especially to the electric system and communication lines.
