Livingston County Probation Supervisor Elizabeth Laney has received the first Robert M. Maccarone Award for Outstanding Service by a Probation Professional from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.
State officials announced the new award during the New York State Probation Officers Association Conference in July, and Laney was formally presented with it Sept. 1 by Deputy Commissioner Matthew Charton, director of the state Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives.
The award recognizes service, dedication and professionalism that make a significant contribution to community corrections within the criminal justice system. Livingston County officials also recognized Laney during the county Public Services Committee’s September meeting at the Geneseo Government Center.
Livingston County Probation Director Lynne Mignemi nominated Laney for the honor, citing her pursuit of excellence, professionalism and mentorship during 20 years with the county department.
Mignemi said Laney has advocated for the people served by probation, crime victims, partner agencies and the probation team. She described Laney as an honest and creative colleague who helped guide the department’s work.
Laney credited the full probation staff for the recognition and said she was proud to serve the community where she grew up and continues to live and raise her family.
“We have a very talented probation team who work hard each and every day to serve our community,” Laney said.
Fellow Probation Supervisor Michelle Jordan called Laney a leader and mentor who has helped drive positive changes within the county department.
Charton said probation supervisors play a critical role in fulfilling a department’s mission and described Laney’s work in Livingston County as a model for agencies across the state.
The county Probation Department provides community-based correctional services to adults and juveniles. Its work includes protecting the public, enforcing court-ordered sanctions, supporting victims’ rights and helping people under supervision make changes.
The award is named for Robert M. Maccarone, and Laney is its inaugural recipient.
