Watkins Glen man arrested after pursuit, crash in Corning

A dramatic police pursuit ended in a crash in Corning on Thursday resulting in the arrest of Albert J. Jones, a 33-year-old man from Watkins Glen. Jones was allegedly operating a stolen 1998 Dodge Ram pickup truck when he was spotted by State Police on State Route 414 in the Corning area.

According to authorities, Jones refused to comply with the troopers’ attempts to conduct a traffic stop. This prompted a high-speed chase that involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the City of Corning Police Department, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Village of Watkins Glen Police Department, and the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office.

The pursuit eventually led to Lamphear Court, where Jones lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an apartment building. Jones fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended and charged with several offenses, including Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation.

Jones was also charged with Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. He was treated and released with minor injuries at Guthrie Corning Hospital before being lodged at the Steuben County Jail to be held for Centralized Arraignment Part Court.

In addition to the charges he faces, Jones is also facing additional charges from New York State Parole for violating the terms and conditions of his parole.

The police pursuit was a collaborative effort by multiple agencies, demonstrating the cooperation and coordination of law enforcement in the area. Thankfully, no bystanders were injured during the chase and subsequent crash.
