The intersection of state Routes 5 and 20 and Cooley and Hickox roads in Canandaigua has long been considered one of the town’s most dangerous, according to transportation officials.
After years of requesting changes, it appears that a solution is finally on the way.
Following a review that included a site visit, analysis of reported crashes, and evaluation of traffic volumes and vehicle delay, the state has agreed that a three-color signal light is needed at the intersection.
The intersection was previously “fixed” some 30 years ago, with hills on either side of Cooley Road shaved down to somewhat improve sightlines for motorists. Despite these efforts, it has remained a dangerous intersection with fatal crashes and T-bone accidents occurring over the years.
In addition, concert nights at the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center often result in long lines of cars on Cooley Road trying to get through, exacerbating the already hazardous situation.
Officials hope the changes are complete by the end of 2023.
