William Smith volleyball rebounds with sweep of Hamilton

William Smith volleyball responded with a strong performance Saturday, sweeping Hamilton in three sets to improve to 12-3 overall.

The Herons won the opening set 25-13 before surviving a back-and-forth second set, 28-26. They completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third.

William Smith finished with 43 kills and a .180 hitting percentage, while limiting Hamilton to 22 kills and a .049 mark. Junior setter Delainy Williams paced the offense with 35 assists and added 12 digs.

First-year players Senya Dorny and Cassidy Breuer each recorded 10 kills. Breuer also collected 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Junior Arielle Newsome contributed eight kills, four blocks and two service aces, while Emily Fulton finished with six kills and 10 digs. First-year Sage Duerr added six kills while making her first collegiate start.

The Herons controlled the opening set after jumping ahead 5-0, holding the Continentals to five kills. Hamilton responded in the second set, pushing the teams into extra points before kills from Breuer and Fulton secured the 28-26 win for William Smith.

In the deciding set, William Smith maintained its advantage before Duerr and Breuer teamed up for a match-ending block. Junior libero Kali Vanderhoof led the Herons with 14 digs, helping the team finish with 53.

Hamilton was led by Ayzlinn Trefren, who posted seven kills, 10 digs and three blocks. The Continentals fell to 6-6 on the season.
