For the second-straight season and the 14th time in program history, the Newark Reds have claimed a sectional title.
The two-seeded Reds (19-4) knocked off the top-seeded Batavia Blue Devils (18-5) with a 60-55 victory in the Section V Class B1 Final on Saturday morning at the Blue Cross Arena.
Newark jumped out to a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter, but Batavia came storming back, outscoring the Reds 19-13 in the second quarter and making it a one-point game at the break. Each team traded leads in the second half, but Newark pulled away late after trailing by two possessions.

The Reds were led by Brayden Steve, who netted 18 points and was named tournament MVP. Three others finished in double figures. Raeshawn Howard scored 15, Kellen Foster poured in 12, and Jaypar Allen added 10. Mikey McKenzie scored a team-high 17 points for the Blue Devils.

Newark will move on and face the Class B2 champion Wellsville in the NYS Class B Far West Regional Qualifier on Wednesday.
