New York Yankees left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes will not participate in the World Baseball Classic as initially planned.
According to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic, Cortes recently tweaked his hamstring and will not pitch for Team USA next month.
Catcher Kyle Higashioka (Team USA), second baseman Gleyber Torres (Team Venezuela), and reliever Jonathan Loáisiga (Team Nicaragua) are the only Yankees in the tournament.
The tournament will begin with pool play on March 8 across four host cities: Taichung, Taiwan, Tokyo, and Miami. The championship game will take place at loanDepot park in Miami on March 21.
