Five buggy occupants ejected after crash with pickup truck: Driver had BAC of 0.21%

On February 11, 2023, a serious accident took place on Powell Road, just west of Trenton Road, in the Town of Trenton. The incident involved a pickup truck and an Amish buggy, resulting in multiple injuries.

According to State Police, the preliminary investigation showed that a 2015 Ford pickup truck, operated by Douglas N. Clark, 58, from Barneveld, was traveling eastbound on Powell Road when he struck a horse-drawn Amish buggy, causing the buggy to overturn and eject all five occupants.


The operator of the buggy, Andy Swartzentruber, age 26, from Barneveld, and the passengers were transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The youngest passenger, Clara A Swartzentruber, age 2, was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital with a fractured skull and a broken leg and is listed in critical condition.

Clark was charged with aggravated DWI, driving with a BAC of 0.21%, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, failure to exercise due care, leaving the scene of an accident, and following too closely.

He was issued appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in the town of Trenton Court on February 27, 2023, at 4 p.m.

The Trenton Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact them at (315) 336-1040. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
