One of Tompkins County’s largest employers is cutting its workforce.

BorgWarner tells the Ithaca Voice that a consolidation and closure plan will be complete by Q4 of 2024.

While that timeline gives workers there a full-year longer of employment, the outcome is largely the same.

Over the next two years, BorgWarner, which is an automotive manufacturer will close one of it’s two plants between Lansing and Ithaca.

All of this comes as the company decided to consolidate valvetrain production at another facility operated by BorgWarner. The company currently employs 1,500 workers in Tompkins County and is the third largest employer in the county.

The final number of job cuts are not clear at this point. Some estimates reported by The Voice indicated that as much as a quarter of the workforce in Tompkins County could be reduced.
