SUNY officials have allowed for refugee students from 16 different countries to go to college at the in-state tuition rate.
These students are from countries with a temporary protected status with the U.S. Some of these countries include Afghanistan, Haiti, and Ukraine.
The approval was made by the Board of Trustees at the State University of New York and was already in place for students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2017.
Many of the students receiving this benefit do not have the opportunity to move home and are going to college for safety reasons.
