No winner declared yet for New York’s 50th Senate District

Despite the election being weeks ago, no winner has been declared for New York’s 50th Senate District.

32,000 of the more than 90,000 ballots have been counted by the Onondaga County Board of Elections. The reason for another hand count is because of the close margin between Democratic Sen. John Mannion and challenger Rebecca Shiroff. Mannion led by just 27 votes, prompting a recount by hand.

So far it appears that the hand count is showing what the machine count did. Machine counts are incredibly accurate for the most part.

Mannion was first elected for the position in 2020 after filling a seat vacated in 2018. He had run in 2018 but narrowly lost to Republican Bob Antonacci.
