Throop man sentenced in connection with crash that killed Weedsport man

A Throop man has been sentenced to four to 12 years in state prison in connection with a crash that killed a Weedsport man in 2021.

Defendant admits to taking heroin laced with fentanyl

The Citizen reports that 25-year-old Tristan Hope was sentenced in Cayuga County Court Monday on a manslaughter charge. 52-year-old Michael Maltese of Weedsport was killed in the February 2021 crash on Route 31 in the Cayuga County town of Mentz.

Hope pled guilty on May 3 after admitting he had taken heroin laced with fentanyl before getting behind the wheel. His vehicle crossed the center line and hit the Maltese vehicle head-on in the eastbound lane. Maltese, who worked for the Department of Corrections for 26 years, was on his way home from work when the crash took place.

The victim’s daughter, mother, and sister spoke during sentencing.
