The town of Geneva is interested in partnering with Cornell University on its statewide internet of things (IoT) network.
An IoT network is a group of interconnected devices that are monitored by sensors. In the case of the town, Geneva Town Supervisor Mark Venuti says the town’s water facilities could be monitored for any changes that would indicate a minor problem before it became a major one.
What is the Internet of Things?
Cornell University’s Energy and the Environment Research Lab is working together to provide building managers with a system to visualize their building’s energy and environmental trends. Low-cost Long Range Wide Access Network (LoRaWAN) based hardware is being developed in-house capable of monitoring power consumption, air quality, water consumption, and other energy and environmental trends. Building managers can watch trends from multiple devices in real-time and are provided with personal recommendations outlining suggested actions for improving energy and environmental performance. Building performance data is shared amongst building managers in a friendly network environment, where multiple users can share ideas and work together to further improve building performance.
Venuti attended a meeting with Cornell officials last week to further discuss the idea. An extensive IoT network has been in operation in Ithaca and Tompkins County for the past several years.
