Anthony Rizzo’s walk-off homer lifts Yankees to sweep of Rays

The New York Yankees completed the three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays with a 2-1 walk-off victory on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

Anthony Rizzo drilled his 16th home run of the season into the bullpen in right-center in the bottom of the ninth to give New York the win.

Rizzo drove in the other run and tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single to right-center. He had two of the Yankees’ four hits.

Clarke Schmidt started on the mound for New York after Luis Severino was scratched before the game and put on the COVID-19 injured list. The right-hander tossed three shutout innings while striking out five. Ryan Weber, who was selected to a Major League contract and added to the 26-man roster from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before the game, allowed one run over 3 2/3 innings. Ron Marinaccio and Michael King also had scoreless outings in relief.

The Yankees will head to Toronto to begin a three-game series with the Blue Jays on Friday night. Jordan Montgomery will get the start on the hill for New York. The first pitch is slated for 7:07 p.m.
