Mets fall to Mariners in series opener

The New York Mets fell to the Seattle Mariners, 2-1, in the series opener on Friday night at Citi Field.

Max Scherez got the start for New York and tossed seven innings of one-run ball. Drew Smith allowed the go-ahead run in relief and Adam Ottavino fired a scorless inning.

New York’s only run of the game came in the first when Francisco Lindor lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0.

Jesse Winker smoked a game-tying RBI single to center in the fourth.

Ty France put Seattle on top in the eighth with an RBI single through to right.

New York had just five hits and Brandon Nimmo collected two of them.

The Mets will try to bounce back on Saturday night. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
