Letters are going out to Cayuga County residents this week, asking them to become honorary members of the NY State Sheriff’s Institute.
The Institute aims to foster better relationships between law enforcement and youth. Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck tells about one of the ways the Institute accomplishes its goal.
From the Sheriff’s Institute website:
“The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is located on Keuka Lake in Penn Yan, NY
It is for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 who because of economic reasons would not have an opportunity to attend a summer camp or enjoy a summer vacation. At the camp, kids are technology-free, as they make new friends, enjoy the outdoors, and try new things like fishing and sailing. While there, campers interact positively with law enforcement who are there as counselors and volunteers complementing the camp staff. Hundreds of kids each year attend the summer camp at no cost to their families due to the generosity of donors.”
The summer camp was featured on TV’s Fox and Friends.
The Institute also provides training for law enforcement personnel throughout the state. Listen to my full Inside the FLX conversation with Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck below.
