The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office handled 1,865 calls for service in August, made 39 Penal Law or warrant arrests and responded to 45 motor vehicle crashes, according to Sheriff Brian Schenck’s monthly report.
Deputies also made two driving while intoxicated arrests, conducted 353 traffic stops and issued 105 traffic tickets. The office reported 292 civil and warrant attempts.
Investigations and jail activity
The Criminal Investigations Division was assigned 21 cases during August. It closed 10 cases by arrest and 16 through investigation. The division had been assigned 184 cases through the end of the month, according to the report.
The county jail averaged 118 incarcerated people per day. It recorded 84 admissions and 70 discharges, transported 12 people to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and served 12,046 meals.
The Civil Division served 217 papers and reported receiving $82,182.30. Of that amount, $9,310.51 was remitted to the county treasurer.
Training and new deputies
School resource officers from every Cayuga County school district, as well as Skaneateles and Jordan-Elbridge, took part in the fourth annual summer training. The two-day program covered juvenile law updates, online risks affecting young people and officer wellness, followed by a scenario-based active attacker response exercise involving law enforcement, fire, EMS and telecommunicators.
The office also welcomed three deputies assigned to its Custody Division during August: Alec Teska, Cameron Goff and Dustin Swartwood.
Nine Cayuga County children attended the New York State Sheriffs’ Summer Camp on Keuka Lake during the month. Schenck credited local donors with helping provide the opportunity and thanked Deputy Val Stephens for organizing it.
